At Insulcon Technical, we’re proud to announce the addition of two talented young apprentices to our engineering design team. Meet Sammy Farman, Joe Masters and Ryan McGee, who’ve joined us to help drive our ambitious growth plans for 2025 and beyond.
As specialists in insulation solutions for the offshore oil and gas industry, we design and manufacture innovative insulation jackets that protect equipment and pipework in the harshest conditions. This year we are looking to bring our products to new global markets including America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.
Our expansion plans require a forward-thinking approach, and that includes investing in the next generation of talent.
Meet Our Apprentices
Born and raised in Marsden, 18-year-old Sammy has always had a passion for computers and design. At home, he uses his own 3D printer to create toys, tools and custom stands. It’s the perfect way to showcase his creativity and technical skills!
It was while studying at Whitburn CofE Academy, Sammy developed his love for computers and graphic design, and he was keen to incorporate these into any future career. Although Sammy was offered degree places in Computer Science at two UK universities, he decided to look for a more hands-on, creative way to develop his skills rather than traditional academic study.
That’s when Sammy discovered the apprenticeship in engineering design. Combining real workplace experience with continuous learning in computers and design, it met the bill, and he decided to go for it.
Sammy smashed his interview with TDR Training, a specialist in training and apprenticeship programmes, and was introduced to Insulcon Technical. It was the perfect match, and Sammy started his apprenticeship with us in January 2025.
Sammy said: “Although it’s still early days, I’m loving it. Everyone at Insulcon has been so welcoming, and the work is really interesting.”
“Some of the equipment protected by our insulation systems is highly complex. You need to make sure the insulation fits perfectly around this equipment so that it works effectively. That’s where our unique design software comes in. Insulcon Technical develops tailored designs which produce millimetre-perfect insulation jackets. These can then be fitted easily and quickly onsite. The Insulcon Technical name is known across the world, and I can’t wait until I’m designing solutions for clients which make a global impact. This is a fantastic opportunity for me.”

- Sammy has a head for heights as he enjoys rock climbing.
- Sammy is qualified in first aid so you can be sure you’ll be safe in his hands.

19-year-old Ryan McGee began his journey at Hebburn Comprehensive, where he achieved a GCSE in CAD Engineering alongside six other subjects. His passion for engineering led him to Gateshead College, where he excelled in his studies, successfully completing a Level 3 BTEC qualification in General Engineering, achieving a distinction in the CAD module.
Ryan always knew that university wasn’t the right path for him. He was keen to avoid accumulating student debt and was determined to gain practical, hands-on experience through an apprenticeship. When he discovered the Design Engineering Apprenticeship at Insulcon Technical, he knew it was the perfect fit.
“I’ve always fancied to be a CAD engineer,” Ryan said. “Studying at university was never an option for me—I’ve always wanted to develop real-world skills. My dream is to become a fully qualified CAD engineer, and this apprenticeship with Insulcon Technical offers the ideal route to get me there. Everyone is very warm and friendly, and I’m excited to contribute to the company’s success by working on the design of world-leading products.”
Ryan’s drive and passion for engineering make him a valuable addition to the Insulcon Technical team. We’re confident he will achieve his career goals while playing an integral role in helping us reach new heights.
Three fun facts about Ryan:
- Ryan is a fully qualified personal trainer (PT) and worked at Ramside Hall for a short while. We’re hoping he’ll whip the Insulcon Technical team into shape.
- Ryan is a sports natural and, as well as a PT, he enjoys football, boxing and lifeguarding.
- Like Sammy, Ryan is a trained first aider. Insulcon Technical couldn’t be safer!
Both apprentices will play a critical role in designing our world-leading insulation jackets using specialised software, ensuring we continue to deliver the quality and innovation our clients expect.
Nurturing from the ground-up
Helping our new apprentices settle in and learn the ropes will be CAD designer apprentice, Joe Masters.
Joe joined Insulcon Technical last year while studying part-time for a BTEC level 3 in engineering design. After successfully passing his course with flying colours, Joe was taken on full-time and has been working within our design team on some major projects.
Joe will be taking both Ryan and Sammy under his wing to ensure they get to grips with the basics before moving onto some of the simplest and most straight forward design projects.
